Client Work: Character Design Commission
’Heulwen and the Sword of Evered"‘

First stage: Trying to find the right pose to help convey the correct personality of the character, and her relation to the sword.

Client liked the pose of the 4th sketch, but the tilted head and expression of the 1st sketch. So we combined the two.
Then, I designed the outfit (based on clients very loose sketches, while also adding my own ideas). Client disliked the clutter of the chest and sewn on patches, and wanted the character to have extra accessories only if it were meant to carry something. She suggested to work with the idea of waders as the primary element of her outfit. I removed the extra scarfs and leather chest/shoulder armor.

Next step was figuring out the color comp for this design. The client had no previous idea for this step (other than hair and skin color) so I personally created variations of what looked best.

The client liked the pale shirt and green or teal variation best. Client also added that the hair was too orange, it needed to be more blonde. She couldn’t decide between the more olive tone green, or the teal green. So I made a gradient for her to choose from. We decided to go for a color that was between the first two color comps.
